Nicolas Baudin was a French explorer, cartographer, and naturalist.  In 1800 he was sent on a scientific expedition by Napoleon Bonaparte to Australia (New Holland) with zoologists and botanists to explore and map the west and southern coasts of the continent.  More than 2500 new species were discovered and many were published in Voyage de découvertes aux terres Australes… between 1807 and 1816.
