Robert Sweet

Robert Sweet 1782 - 1835
Initially working as a horticulturist, in 1824 Sweet was acquitted on a charge at the Old Bailey of receiving several rare exotic plants stolen from The Royal Gardens at Kew. He continued to cultivate plants, but from 1826 to 1831, devoted most of his time to the production of botanical works.

Published in London by J. Ridgway, Flora Australasica; or a selection of handsome or curious plants, natives of New Holland, and the South Sea Islands, contained a total of 56 engraved, hand-coloured plates. It was issued in 14 monthly parts from 1827 to 1828.

For the purposes of illustration, Sweet obtained his specimens from several nurseries in England. It is interesting to note so many Australian plants were already under cultivation in England at such an early date.
