A Synopsis of The Birds of Australia

John Gould's "A Synopsis of the Birds of Australia and the Adjacent Islands" was his first publication concerning the study of Australian birds. It was published in four parts, the first two in 1837 and the remaining two in 1838, just before Gould's departure for Australia. It consists of 73 plates and 199 species. It is one of the few illustrated works by Gould not to be issued in folio size. It was published in Imperial octavo format, with the birds figured as head studies only. Allan McEvey, who was Curator of Birds at the National Museum of Victoria, wrote in 1979 that the drawings for the lithographs in the Synopsis may be attributed to Elizabeth Gould. He states that "in their direct apppeal and painstaking production [they are] among the most charming of Gould plates". The hand-colouring is superb. It is not known how many copies were published. It is not particularly rare, however, we have not seen individual plates offered for sale before.
