Robert Fitzgerald
Robert David Fitzgerald 1830-1892
Born in Ireland, where he studied civil engineering, Fitzgerald arrived in New South Wales and joined the Department of Lands as a draftsman. An enthusiastic naturalist and collector, Fitzgerald published the first seven parts of
Australian Orchids between !875 and 1882. He was ably assisted by Arthur James Stopps, a lithographer in the Lands Department, and various artists who hand-coloured the prints to FitzGerald's instructions. Four more parts were published before, and the final part after, Fitzgerald's death.
