Pierre-Joseph Redoute
Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840)
Redouté was born into an artistic family in Belgium. He became a master of the stipple engraving technique. Redouté is the most famous of all botanical artists. He was often referred to as "the Rafael of flowers". "His art is the perfect synthesis of natural ability, acute observation of the natural world, beauty of design and personal expression: he continues to be regarded as one of the most skillful botanical artists of all time" (DeLaurentis & Holt, The Art of the Garden: Collecting Antique Botanical Prints).
