H.C. Andrews, Botanical prints

H.C. Andrews (fl.1794 - 1830)

Andrews' periodical, The Botanist's Repository, commenced in 1797 and continued until 1812.  This was the first serious rival to Curtis's Botanical Magazine.  Its target audience was the amateur gardner.  It was more artistic than its rivals.  The plates were rendered in a more decorative and not just purely scientific manner.  Andrews was not only the artist, but also the engraver, colourist, and publisher.  A large number of new species were depicted and described, many from New Holland (Australia).
