Louis Duperrey

Natural history prints, Duperrey
Louis Isidore Duperrey 1786-1865

Far less well-known than his contemporaries, Freycinet and Dumont d'Urville, Duperrey joined the French navy at age 16, accompanying Freycinet in his circumnavigation of the world on board the Uranie from 1817 to 1820. In 1822, taking command of the Coquille, Duperrey sailed from Toulon, to complete scientific work first undertaken on the Uranie. Dumont d'Urville served as second in command, and later renamed the Coquille as the Astrolabe when he assumed command of the vessel, for his own scientific expeditions [see also Jules Dumont d'Urville]. An account of Duperrey's voyage was published, in Paris, as "Voyage autour du monde, exécuté par ordre du Roi, sur La corvette de Sa Majesté, La Coquille, pendant les années 1822, 1823, 1824 et 1825." The engraved plates are beautifully rendered and coloured.
