Charles d'Orbigny

Charles d'Orbigny (1806-1876) 
Charles d'Orbigny  was a French botanist whose Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle was a lavishly illustrated survey of known animals and plants designed to appeal to both academics and the general public. The illustrations are by some of the best known French artists of the day including Traviès, Oudart, Prêtre, and Sesumihl. The Dictionnaire was first published in Paris in 1849.
